Canned plums instead of fresh ones for my cobbler?

Canned plums can provide a more intense plum flavor, as the syrup they are stored in can add an extra layer of sweetness. This makes them perfect for adding to cakes, cobblers, pies, and other desserts. If you decide to use canned instead of fresh you will want to limit the intake of sugar on the recipe to balance the flavors.

Ingredients

10 Servings

6 cups fresh plums

1 & 1/2 cups granulated sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

2 teaspoons flour

1/2 cup red wine

Topping:

2 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup white sugar

1/2 cup dark brown sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup heavy cream (can substitute for buttermilk)

1 egg

8 tbsp butter

Sugar Topping:

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1/2 tablespoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees

  2. Once plums are sliced toss them with sugar cinnamon, nutmeg and flour and toss evenly to coat the plums.

  3. Pour plums into stove top pan and pour in red wine. Stir for 10 minutes until mixture comes together. Pour into baking dish in a single layer and set aside.

  4. Begin Topping by mixing dry ingredients; all-purpose flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking powder and salt. In another bowl whisk together heavy cream and egg gently pour into the flour mixture and hand mix together to make a shaggy mixture that will crumble nicely on top of the plums. Crumble evenly over the top of the plum mixture.

  5. Cut 8 tbsp of butter into even size cubes. Sprinkle over top of the crumble mixture so they are evenly spread over the pan. Lastly, evenly sprinkle sugar topping of sugar and cinnamon over the entire pan.

  6. Place back in the oven and cook for 45-50 minutes, until the topping is golden and plums are tender. Top with fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for a great dessert!
